Scope

This Hacker Alert Service Privacy Policy applies to the Hacker Alert service only and supplements the general Privacy Policy located on the bottom of the home page of our website. By subscribing to our Hacker Alert service, you agree to our collection and use of Your Confidential Personal Information as described in this Hacker Alert Privacy Policy. As used in this Hacker Alert Service Privacy Policy, “we” and “our” refers to either TDS Telecommunications LLC or TDS Broadband Service LLC, as applicable to the provider of your Hacker Alert Service.

Information Collection and Use

Confidential Personal Information is information that relates to you and identifies or can be used to identify you. This information includes your name, billing address, social security number, driver's license number, credit card number, bank account number, email address, and credit information. When you subscribe to Hacker Alert, we will:

  • Identify you using your IP address to monitor your internet traffic, including the content of your email and the content of sites you visit, in order to analyze that traffic and identify possible internet attacks and other malicious activities. When the Hacker Alert service detects a threat, an alert will be sent to you via the Hacker Alert security portal, email, and, if you so select, by text message.
  • Collect and use your email address to send you service activation notices, monthly reports, and/or alerts to you when Hacker Alert detects a possible internet threat on one of the computers in your home network.
  • Collect and use cell phone numbers to send you text messages. This is only done if you elect to receive information on possible internet attacks via text message.
  • Use Confidential Personal Information we have on your account to bill you for the service. This Confidential Personal Information may include your name, billing address, credit card number, bank account number, or email address.

The Hacker Alert service website uses session cookies to make it easier for you to navigate. Cookies are small data files or other similar technologies stored on your computer or mobile browser to allow the website owner to personalize communication by collecting and storing information identifying you when visiting the site. Session cookies expire when you close your browser.

Internet traffic that is encrypted (e.g., https) is not analyzed for any purpose. The Hacker Alert service is designed not to collect personal names or addresses that may be contained in your internet traffic.

The Hacker Alert service does not use the content of your email or Internet traffic for any purposes other than protecting against malware and other security threats, other than as required by law, although TDS does also use the data from the Hacker Alert service in the ordinary course of its business to the protect its systems and property. Data analyzed by Hacker Alert service is also used to help refine and develop the Hacker Alert service itself.

Sharing Your Confidential Personal Information

We do not share the contents of your Internet traffic or email gathered via Hacker Alert with any third party.

We will not disclose your Confidential Personal Information without your express or implied consent outside of TDS, its Affiliates, or its authorized agents, other than as described in this Hacker Alert Service Privacy Policy or, as noted above, the general Privacy Policy.

Accessing Your Confidential Personal Information

You may review your Hacker Alert service account online at hackeralert.tds.net. In addition, as outlined in the general Privacy Policy, you may contact us by phone to request to review and/or edit your Confidential Personal Information.

Security of Your Confidential Personal Information

We take reasonable security safeguards to protect against such risks as loss or unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure of Confidential Personal Information.

We restrict access to Confidential Personal Information to those who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve our services. These individuals are bound by confidentiality obligations and may be subject to discipline, including termination and criminal prosecution, if they fail to meet these obligations.

Customers should not provide their account information or pin to anyone other than Authorized Users on their account. Customers are encouraged to protect their computer and passwords against unauthorized access. When accessing information online, customers should sign off when finished using a shared computer and always log out of any Web site after viewing Confidential Personal Information.

We will not store Confidential Personal Information beyond what is necessary for business purposes, including for internal service evaluation and quality assurance purposes, except as otherwise required by law.

Enforcement of This Privacy Policy

We train our employees on the proper handling and securing of information which includes reporting potential privacy concerns.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We will occasionally update this Hacker Alert Service Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the Hacker Alert service, new legal requirements, changes within our business, or to clarify our practices. When we post changes to this Hacker Alert Service Privacy Policy, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top.
